“MacGyver: The Complete Sixth Season“
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Paramount
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
6/13/06
Special Features: None
Review:

The next-to-last season of “MacGyver” continued is a fan favorite. Featuring 21 episodes we have everything from an episode where Mac helps dig for the tomb of Alexander the Great where someone is causing accidents at the dig for personal reasons to Mac’s nemesis Murdoc (Michael Des Barnes) imploring Mac to help save his sister. Murdoc elects to come out of retirement but Homicide International demands that Murdoc take out Mac to demonstrate his desire to rejoin the organization. Murdoc is, of course, conflicted because Mac helped him and because he’s the only blemish on an otherwise perfect killing record. Richard Dean Anderson continues to be terrific form as Mac and the series continued pumping out a number of terrific adventures during season six.

Image & Sound:

Picture quality for a series from a decade ago looks pretty decent but it could have been cleaned up a bit more. MacGyver definitely could have used one of his famous paperclips or other misc. materials to spruce this up. I’m a bit disappointed at how soft the picture is occasionally. Clarity is decent and color good but it could be a whole lot better. The mono sound hasn’t really been enhanced all that much; it appears that it’s been compressed a bit here and there so the dialog and sound effects are a trifle louder than I expected. ---

Special Features:

Beyond previews not a thing that is worthwhile. Here’s hoping that since CBS took over the Paramount catalog for reissue on DVD that they will include extras on season seven (such as the “MacGyver” TV movies that fans are very fond of) in lieu of extras (since it’s unlikely at this late date that there will be any produced for this set). Hopefully CBS will continue to release the Paramount library with as much care as they have put into some of their other recent releases and not take the no frills approach.

No commentary tracks

Final Words:

A solid transfer I have to give credit for the consistent release schedule for the show. Fans will be pleased with the presentation for the most part. Here’s hoping that extras will somehow accompany the next set in the series in the form of at the very least the TV movies.
