We all wish we had more mad money. Three women (Diane
Keaton, Queen Latifah and Kate Holmes)do something about
it. Faced with losing her house and working a humilating
job as a women's janitor after her husband (Ted Danson)loses
his job, Bridget Cardigan (Keaton) approaches her two new
co-workers that work at the Federal Reserve destroying old,
worn out money to "recycle" the cash in a way they can all
benefit from it.
"Mad Money" has a good pedigree but even with a good
pedigree sometimes a worthless mutt will show up in the
litter. Director Callie Khouri (the writer of "Thelma and
Louise" and "The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood")
does a good job of working with the actors. The film just
doesn't have much to it.
"Mad Money" wants to be a kooky caper film but lacks
the elements of humor that makes the best within that genre
work so well. Imagine, say, "Ocean's 11" with women pulling
the scam and you'll get an idea of the potential of this
film. Keaton is quite good as is the rest of the main and
supporting cast. The film just doesn't gel even with the
awesome cast and talent behind the camera. It happens. "Mad
Money" isn't necessarily a bad film just uninspired and
predictable at every turn. I just didn't care about the
characters or their woes and that's essential in a film
like this. Khouri insures that the film looks good and her
direction is smooth as silk but silk can be slippery and
sadly nothing funny sticks to the silky material we're given
here.
The DVD transfer looks and sounds quite good.
