Review: |
"Magnum P.I." returns for another
go round on DVD with some slight modifications. Darren McGavin
turns in a crusty performance as a writer in the fun "Mad
Buck Gibson" and Magnum is reunited in a two part episode
with his "dead" wife in a interesting two part episode. It's
an entertaining season that would see John Hillerman nominated
for a Golden Globe. ---

| Image
and Sound: |
The transfer
looks pretty good given the age of the series with nice color
reproduction. The set doesn't exhibit an improvement on season
one which suffered from quite a bit of analog defects in the
way of dirt and scratches. The image quality is pretty sharp
overall. The mono sound comes across crisp and clear if a bit
quiet at times. |
| The
Extras: |
Pretty
poor pickings here particularly for fans of "The A-Team" and
"Knight Rider" who have already purchased or are about to
purchase the second season on DVD. Would it have hurt Universal
to include some interviews with Tom Selleck, Bellasario or
some of the guest stars? Surely they have older interview
produced for promo pieces for TV? What about the gag reels?
My guess is that if they took a look in their vault they'd
find something worthwhile to put on this set as an extra.
On the positive side of things, Universal has started using
the slim cases in place of the dreaded digipak.

What are
you kidding? It's as absent as Robin Masters the always invisible
master of Magnum's domain. |

Words: |
While I
appreciate that Universal is releasing the show to DVD (and
how could they not? It's probably one of their most profitable
series), I'd love to see them use a bit of imagination and put
some effort into some bonus materials. It's pretty sad that
other TV shows with a smaller audience get vintage and new materials
as part of their bonus materials while fans of any of the shows
produced by Universal get nothing. Guys pony up already this
isn't fair to the fans. |
