The Review: Episodes Season 1: Pilot, Red Dress, Home Alone 4, Shame, Malcolm Babysits, Sleepover, Francis Escapes, Krelboyne Picnic, Lois vs. Evil, Stock Car Races, Funeral Cheerleader, Rollerskates, The Bots and the Bees, Smunday, Water Park; A truly unique situation comedy that proves to be quite entertaining. Each character is perfectly cast. I particularly enjoyed Rollerskates, Malcolm's father was hilarious. Probably the best part about the show is the lack of a laugh track. More sitcoms should follow this lead…
Image and Sound The image is an improvement over the original broadcast. The colors are very vivid. There is a bit of grain, but it is not at all distracting. I do wish that this set had been mastered in DD5.1, because the sound is a bit weak on the grand scheme of DVD. Dialogue is never drowned out by the soundtrack though, as it seems to have been disbursed appropriately. Overall, definitely room for improvement here.
The Extras Featurettes; Malcolm Vision - is an outtake stint hosted by Bryan Cranston, noting special here; Malcolm in the Middle: A Stroke of Genius - is an E! True Hollywood Story style featurette. Well done and very insightful; Dewey's Day Job - is a short featurette about the actor who plays Dewey; Cold Opens - is a series of alternate opening sequences; Four Deleted Scenes; Behind the Middle - a behind the scenes montage of season two.
Commentary The commentaries are very relaxed. Many members of the cast and crew join in and seem to be having a lot of fun doing them. If you're interested, you'll learn a lot listening to these.
Final Words: TV shows on DVD are the greatest thing since sliced bread! It is nice to see shows that are relatively new being released. This is a nice set that has a decent amount of extra features. I do recommend it for those who, like me, are addicted to
