"Malevolent"
stars Lou Diamond Phillips as Jack, a detective who, when he
passes out one night in a bar, wakes up to discover that his
gun is missing, stolen by the man he was talking to before his
fainting spell. Soon enough, dead bodies start popping up right
and left, and guess whose bullets are responsible? You can pretty
much tell where all of this is headed, and even the inclusion
of Kari Wuhrer as an exotic dancer can't liven things up. In
the end, it's just another turgid, overheated cop thriller with
little energy or pizazz. |
| Image
and Sound |
Bad movie, good transfer. The 1.85:1
anamorphic image looks better than most direct-to-video schlock,
with nice color saturation and good contrast enriched by solid
blacks and above-average shadow detail. Edges are sharp throughout
with very little edge enhancement, and the overall picture
exhibits little to no noise or grain. ***
The sound is mastered in Dolby
Digital 5.1, and is also above average for its type. The surrounds
are used generously for the soundtrack and some of the sound
effects, while the front end gets most of the attention when
it comes to the action. Dialogue sounds natural throughout.

Straight
from the direct-to-video bin, and likely to end up back there
