Clearly steroid use has gotten the better of Vince McMahon's
mind how else to explain the films he has spun off from
his WWE franchise in the form of the horrible "See No Evil"(naturally
featuring a wrestler) and "The Marine". This high octane
low intelligence action thriller is pretty short on thrills
but does have some darn good explosions the hallmark of
a great unintentionally funny z-movie. ***
John Triton (John Cena) gets kicked out of the service
after he kicks butt against orders. Unable to hold a job
because of his problems with authority, he and his wife
go camping in the South Carolina mountains (Australia standing
in for the United States) where his wife is carjacked by
some nasty thieves. Needless to say John goes ballistic
and decides to find his wife as a one man lean, mean killing
machine. The film is available in both rated and unrated
format so fans who want to expose their children to violence,
blood and guts but not profanity (never accuse the U.S.
of having a weak stomach!) can enjoy this without the fear
of their kids learning bad words (they may want to kill
some people afterwards but that's acceptable). ---
Image & Sound: "The Marine" looks surprisingly good
since it's one of those burned preview discs that I hate.
While the film doesn't have the steroid soaked look I had
anticipated the colors are bold, bright and the images clear.
A pity that pixilation comes up as an issue here. Audio
sounds beefy with nice use of the surround speakers as part
of the mix. ---

If the special features here were competing in the wrestling
ring, they would be pinned within the first few seconds.
We get "The Making of the Marine" a featurette on the production
of the film. A profile of performer John Cena, his military
history, "basic training" and Cena's day off in Australia.
There's also a featurette on the World Premiere of the movie
at Camp Pendelton as well as WWE promotional garbage. Most
the featurettes are pure fluff. A pity there isn't an audio
commentary as I'm sure the director and Cena would have
been fun to listen to discussing this mindless, mind numbing
adventure. ---

Final Words:
|
One thing I learned from "The
Marine" is that good soldiers that have trouble following
orders make great action heroes because they do exactly what
they're told not to do. This might explain John McClane from
"Die Hard" maybe the next film in that series (after 4) should
be a prequel. Heck, we could redub this whole movie and pretend
it's the prequel. Nah.that would cheapen that fun franchise.
For what it is "The Marine" is mindless, absurd, badly written
fun in the outback. |
