The Review:

Someone once asked, "How many times can you insult your wife and it still be funny?" A lot, apparently, as that was the whole premise of "Married with Children," which enjoyed a ten-year run on Fox. While I enjoyed the show until it "jumped the shark" with a talking dog, I can't say I was ever a devoted fan of the series. Still I remember seeing much funnier episodes than the ones presented here. In fact, other than the famous "lost episode" ("I'll See You in Court"), it's hard to determine why any of these were deemed worthy of such an honor as being the only episodes available on DVD. The episodes aren't bad, per se, but I doubt many people will agree with the use of the term "outrageous." With news that the series will soon be available in season box sets, fans shouldn't be too upset over these collections, but we're still left to wonder if Columbia/Tristar put any thought into this package at all, or if they just grabbed some random episodes and pressed them on a disc. *** The episodes are: ***

Vol. 1 ***

"A Dump of My Own" -- Al builds a bathroom in the garage. *** "You Better Shop Around (parts 1 & 2)" -- the Bundys move into a supermarket and compete for groceries ***

"No Chicken, No Check" -- Bud and Kelly buy a car ***

"I'll See You In Court." -- the famous lost episode in which our heroes sue a motel for taping them having sex ***

Vol. 2 ***

"Have You Driven a Ford Lately?" -- Al and Steve restore an old Mustang ***

"Who'll Stop the Rain?" -- Al tries to fix a leaky roof ***

"Raingirl" -- Kelly gets a job as a TV weather girl ***

"A Man's Castle" -- Peg makes their bathroom more feminine ***

"If Al Had a Hammer" -- Al uses his dad's hammer to turn the garage into a room

Image and Sound

All episodes are presented in the original 1.33:1 full-frame format. The image looks good, with only the occasional shimmer or trace of grain, but I don't know that it looks better than digital cable or satellite. Color saturation is also good, although the drabness of the show (reminiscent of "All in the Family") makes that issue less noticable than it might otherwise be. The sound is presented in Dolby 2.0 and is consistently clear.

The Extras The extras are all commercials. One for a Sinatra CD, one for "The Sweetest Thing," and one for other television comedies available from Columbia/TriStar.
Commentary None
Final Words: Hardly the most "outrageous" episodes, this is a passable offering but nothing special. Worth buying, I guess, if you just can't wait for the season box sets and don't have access to the show in syndication.
