“Melrose Place - The Fourth Season”
Reviewer:
Taylor Carlson
Studio: Paramount
Genre: TV Series
Release:
4/15/08
Special Features: None
Review:

In its prime, Melrose Place was one of the finest shows FOX had going for them. Spun off from Beverly Hills 90210, the series focuses on a group of radically-different twenty-somethings living in a Hollywood apartment complex, and their lives and obstacles. The show ran from 1992-1999, and its longevity was no doubt due to numerous characters added to the series, and storylines that often went overboard. ***

The nine-disc set includes every episode from the show's fourth season. Episodes included are as follows: Post Mortem Madness, Melrose Is Like A Box Of Chocolates, Blind Ambition, Simply Shocking, The Jane Mutiny, Let The Games Begin, Dial M For Melrose, Amanda Unplugged, El Syd, Free Kimmy, Kimberly Does LA, Hook Like And Hayley, Two Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Oy! To The World, Holy Strokes, The Brooke Stops Here, Sydney Bothered And Bewildered, The Bobby Trap, No Lifeguard On Duty (two-parter), Devil In A Wet Dress, Circle of Strife, Run Billy Run, Ruthless People, The Burning Couch, Triumph of the Bill, What Comes Up Must Come Down, True Fibs, Melrose Unglued, Peter's Excellent Adventure, Full Metal Betsy, and Dead Sisters Walking (two-parter.) ***

Over the course of its run, Melrose Place always stayed interesting. The characters and the actors who portray them are, to say the least, nothing short of excellent. The performances by these actors are what truly brings the series to life. And no place is that truer than in this season - one of the finest the show ever had. Amongst the faces you'll see in this season are Courney Thorne-Smith, Heather Locklear, and Perry King. ***

The show definitely stands the test of time, and it's no surprise it spawned countless imitators. If you were a fan of the show, there's no reason not to get the DVD sets. ---

Image And Sound:

Sadly, this isn't a great transfer. The show looks like it hasn't been touched up at all since it first aired and there is quite a bit of softness and grain - it looks particularly atrocious during darker scenes. Sound quality holds up slightly better, but it's clear that it didn't get any revamping either. ---

Special Features:

Nothing. A huge disappointment considering this was the show in its prime during this era. ---

Final Words:

Are you a Melrose Place fan? If so, definitely pick this set up. The lack of features is a disappointment, but don't let that steer you away if you're a fan.
