Film lovers suffered a major blow today with the death
of writer-director Anthony Minghella. Minghella died from
a brain hemorage that occurred after surgery on his neck.
He was 54. ***
Minghella made his audience feel alive with the complex
characters and visually stunning photography that was at
the center of his films. He had a unique gift to be able
to take absurdly complex novels ("The English Patient",
"Cold Mountain", and "The Talented Mr. Ripley") and condense
the story into a memorable drama that focused on the complex
relationships at their core. Love, what we'll do to achieve
it how we handle its loss, death and how it can alter who
we are among many of the themes that were at the heart of
his films. ***
Minghella had been appointed head of the British Film
Institute, won an Oscar as Best Director and was nominated
for Best Screenplay for both "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and
"The English Patient". Minghella's first film "Truly Madly
Deeply" which told the story of Nina Juliet Stevenson) a
pianist who is being haunted by Jamie (Alan Rickman) her
former lover who is living in their flat with other ghosts
passing the time watching videos. ***
Minghella won an Oscar for the tragic romantic drama
"The English Patient" and was further honored with additional
nominations for his film "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
