"The Mod Squad" - Season 1 Volume 2
Reviewer:
Taylor Carlson
Studio: Paramount
Genre: TV Series
Release:
3/11/08
Special Features: Julie Barnes featurette
Review:

In the late sixties, The Mod Squad hit the television airwaves. In an era when political unrest dominated the day, the network aimed to shell out a show that would appeal to the counterculture. Starring Michael Cole, Tige Andrews, Peggy Lipton, and Clarence Williams III, the show launched in the autumn of 1968. ***

The Mod Squad follows three fairly young individuals who are assigned to go after criminals as an alternative to being thrown in jail for the very crimes they have committed in the past. The premise won over many audiences during the course of its five-year run, although it never quite took off like some of the television classics of the day. ***

At long last Paramount has begun releasing the Mod Squad on DVD. The first set, released last December, featured the first half of Season One. This set completes the season, releasing the remaining 13 episodes. Episodes included in this set are as follows: Hello Mother My Name is Julie, Flight Five Doesn't Answer, Shell Game, Fear is the Bucking Horse, A Hint of Darkness a Hint of Light, The Uptight Town, A Reign of Guns, A Run for the Money, Child of Sorrow Child of Light, Keep the Faith Baby, Captain Greer Call Surgery, Peace Now Arly Blau, and A Seat by the Window. ***

This is a worthy set, which does justice to a dated-but-still-fun television series. The people at Paramount have handled the series well - and I look forward to the later volumes they will inevitably release. ---

Image And Sound:

Paramount serves up a good DVD transfer for The Mod Squad. The often-colorful picture is clear and bright, and while it looks a little faded at times, isn't a bad transfer by any means. Audio shows its age, but Paramount has done what they could with it, and all of the dialogue comes across fine. ---

Special Features:

The extra feature included in this set is one on the Julie Barnes character. It's a nice little featurette, but a bit on the brief side, and it left this reviewer wanting more. I don't see why they couldn't have recorded some commentaries or cast/crew interviews - those would have made for some entertaining extras.

Final Words:

If you're a fan of The Mod Squad, your ship has come in. This is a terrific set chronicling a great series. This is a well-assembled set. Lack of extras aside, the set still delivers. Well worth investing in, if you're a fan of the series.
