The Review:

For five glorious years “The Bob Newhart Show” kept comedy idiosyncratic and fun. Bob Hartley (Newhart) is a psychologist in Chicago. “Hi Bob” became the catch phrase for comedy when this series premiered in 1972. The Id would be delighted to be a fly on the wall in Bob’s psychology practice. Why? Because his patients let their Ids run free and wild and the world rocks with hilarity as a result. Despite his best Freudian coach side manner, Bob’s patients never really get better. Lucky for us he seems to be a pretty lousy psychologist. This classic TV series got plenty of airtime in sndication years after it ran its last original run episode (that would be 1978 for those of you that don’t have any wrinkles around the eyes). During its hilarious six year run Bob managed to be baffled, befuddled and generally lost as to why people acted the way they did (and do) in the real world. With his beautiful wife Emily (the under rated Suzanne Pleshett), their pilot neighbor Howard (the very funny Bill Daily) and his strange neighbors in the office building where his office is located (Peter Bonerz as his often clueless dentist friend Dr. Jerry Robinson receptionist Carol played by the droll Marcia Wllace) as foils, it’s a wonder that Bob Harley hasn’t been committed yet. Oh, and just in case you wondered where “Seinfeld” borrowed Kramer’s burst through Jerry’s apartment door, Howard did it here first with much the same reaction.

Image and Sound:

The second season of “The Bob Newhart” show looks about the same as the first. Colors are a bit bolder than on the syndicated versions that have shown for years but the image quality is solid considering the age and condition of the source material for the show. Could it have used additional restoration? Sure but it’s not likely to happen. The good news is that these appear to be the uncut original run episodes. The mono sound delivers the dialogue well and that’s what’s important in a comedy. ---

The Extras:

No extras per se but we do get to see Bob uncut.

Commentary: Five delightful commentary tracks with Bob, Marcia Wallace (who played the receptionist on the show and does voiceover work for “The Simpsons”) and creator David Davis. The commentary tracks are fun just to hear these three discuss the making of the show and what they thought while shooting it. ---
Final Words:

A delightful comedy finally makes its appearance on DVD with five funny, informative and interesting commentary tracks. These commentaries won’t take the place of the comedy of the series but they are a nice extra providing additional background on the show.
