Review:

The New Adventures Of Old Christine, created by Kari Lizer, is the latest project starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Seinfeld fame. In addition to the show receiving almost universally positive reviews, it's the first show to break the “Seinfeld Curse.” ***

The show stars Dreyfus as Christine, a working-class single mother who has just gone through a divorce. All the while she struggles to keep up with the world around her, having to deal with the stay-at-home moms from her son's school, as well as her ex-husband. As fate would have it, her ex has a new love interest, also named Christine - hence Dreyfus' character being jokingly referred to as “Old” Christine. Amongst the cast of the series is Clark Gregg as the ex-husband and Hamish Linklater as Matthew, Old Christine's brother who lives with her. ***

After watching this show just one time, it's not at all hard to see how and why it has broken the Seinfeld Curse. The whole “single parent” thing has been overdone in sitcoms, but Dreyfus brings this character to life like no one else possibly could have. And above all, this doesn't come at the price of sacrificing humor. All season long, the show stays fresh and entertaining. ---

Image And Sound:

Since this is a very recent show, I had pretty high expectations for the audio and picture quality on the DVD - and this set lives up to it. Every episode looks terrific, with glitches in the picture being very few and far between - and what little there is you probably won't even notice. Audio is equally good - crisp and clear all the way through. ---

Special Features:

Extras on the DVD are minimal, but what is included here is definitely worth checking out. The Real Christine retrospective runs about 20 minutes long and features interviews with cast and crew - it's the stand-out amongst the bonus features. Additionally, Warner Bros. gives us some unaired scenes from the episodes - deleted scenes are always a terrific extra in sets like this. The third and final extra is a gag reel. Good stuff, but I wish they'd recorded some commentaries for the episodes too.

Final Words:

The Seinfeld Curse is broken. Old Christine is one of the finest sitcoms to come along in a long time, and Warner Bros. has given us a terrific DVD presentation of the series. This is Dreyfus at her best. If you like the series, the DVD is well worth investing in.
