Review:

What Seinfeld curse? A big deal was made about how the Seinfeld cast couldn’t get a successful show if it hit them. The reality is that most sitcoms whether they have famous or well know actors tank their first year anyway. So this was all much to do about nothing. The play’s the thing. Now that we’ve got our Shakespeare quotes out of the way let’s move forward. ***

For those living under a rock, “Christine” isn’t about a sex change nor is it recycling “Quantum Leap” (that was “Journeyman” folks). Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) discovers that her ex-husband is dating a younger woman with the same first name. So not only has she been replaced but her ex is robbing the cradle. Now she’s “Old” Christine and some days she feels it as she tries to keep it together—work, parenting and—horrors!—dating again. ---

Image & Sound:

Sporting a crisp looking anamorphic widescreen transfer (1.78:1—perfect for your widescreen TVs), the show looks extremely good with few flaws (some occasional compression artifacts, soft images, etc.) with nice, clear sound. The only thing that bugged me was the fact that there was no chapter stop placed after the opening titles and I didn’t realize it until I realized I’d missed 1/3 of the plot of the second episode. ***

It should be noted that there are subtitles in English, Chinese(!), Portuguese(!), French but no Spanish which is curious since folks that speak Spanish make up a larger proportion of the population than those that speak Portuguese in this country. ---

Special Features:

Now in its third season, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won a deserved Emmy for her performance in the show and although it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of “Seinfeld”, it still has some nice extras that fans will enjoy. ***

Be aware, however, that this “Christine” is presented in Broadcast order which normally isn’t a problem but the series was shown out of order during its first season run and, as a result, there’s a lack of continuity noticeable on a couple of episodes. ***

We get a gag reel that’s surprisingly not all that funny. We also cut scenes. ***

“The Real Christine” is a behind-the-scenes look at the show covering its creation and the thoughts of cast and crew about its evolution. ---

Final Words:

Although it could come with more extras and the studio could have put the series in proper production order for this set (it just requires paying attention folks), “The New Old Christine” is a solid set. It’s an amusing show that fans of Louis-Dreyfus will enjoy with strong comedic performances.
