"The Bob Newhart Show: The Complete Third Season"
Reviewer:
Kaya Savas
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: TV-Series
Release:
10
Special Features: Commentary by Bob Newhart and cast on 3 episodes; "making of" featurette
Review:

Bob Newhart plays Dr. Bob Hartley who lives in his Chicago high-rise apartment, and the third season continues on his life and the people he ends up dealing with. Newhart seals the show with his always bland look of sarcasm. The show is particularly funny due to the contrast of Bob dealing with patients' problems at work and his own problems at home. In this season Bob finally comes to realization that he may need more help than his patients do. With no confidence in his obsessive compulsive self, Bob tries to get things together. The season 3 set comes with all 24 episodes, a perfect collection for any fan. --

Image & Sound:

The set comes in English or dubbed Spanish, both of which are Dolby Digital mono tracks. You also have the option of English and Spanish subtitles. The sound, while a mono track, provides everything you need for the show. Since the show is a sitcom and takes place on studio sets the sound really has no need to be dynamic. The audio does the show justice. As for picture, the shows are shown in their original 4:3 aspect ratio. The show is 34 years old, so don't expect a transfer with vibrant colors and perfect picture. You'll get the same video quality as if you were watching it on television, it does the set justice. ---

Special Features: The set doesn't boast anything spectacular in terms of special features. You have the standard "making of" featurette and 3 commentaries. You don't come to expect a commentary on every episode for a television set, but you do come to expect at least more than 3 episode commentaries when the set has 24 episodes total.

Final Words:

The set will please fans of the beloved sitcom but the set can't compare to the effort put forward by newer shows. One complaint that many people may have is that all three discs of the set are flippers, which means that there are episodes on both sides of the disc. So if you have a 5 disc DVD player and are the kind of person that likes to put all the discs in and watch them, the double sided discs kind of defeat the purpose cause you'll have to get up to turn them over. Overall, the set will satisfy fans of the show, but those looking for a little insight behind the scenes won't find much.
