Review: |
A warning—if you love this show
and must have it on DVD then skip the first paragraph of this
review. It’s nasty. What a sick world we live in. When there
are real issues to be concerned about we watch two vapid,
self absorbed people with as much intelligence between them
as one tapeworm. That’s the good part of the show. Jessica
“is Chicken of the Sea real tuna or chicken?” Simpson and
Nick “yes I sang all my own stuff” Lachey felt that it would
be important to document the first year of their marriage
on TV. Was this for posterity’s sake or just sheer ego? Perhaps
it was a bit of both. Either way, the show comes off as unintentionally
funny whether it be Jessica debating the origin of buffalo
wings or Nick dressing her down for her ability to shop. Everybody
chooses their own poison so I guess our media and image obsessed
society chose these two nitwits. ***
Fans of the series will enjoy peaking
into the life of what seems to be the media darlings of the
moment. Is it a good series? That all depends upon your definition
entertainment and whether you’re interested in peaking in
on the lives of the rich and famous who moan about being like
you and me. To be fair, it is entertaining in a bad sort of
way. ---

and Sound: |
Nick and
Jessica clearly have a great make up and hairstylist working
on the show. They look great. Natural flesh tones are a highlight
of this disc with surprisingly vibrant colors and excellent
clarity. Remember, looks can be deceiving. The sound has tremendous
presence with great clarity and imaging. --- |

Extras: |
We get
an assortment of music videos by the duo as well as footage
that was cut out of various episodes for time considerations.
There are interviews with Nick and Jessica, Nick and Jessica
“moments” which focus on some of the funniest and most entertaining
moments from the series. There’s also a biography of both
(although this seems a bit premature) and discographies as
well for those who also collect the duo’s music. ---

No commentary
tracks per se but maybe that’s a good thing. --- |

Words: |
All 10 episodes
of the abbreviated first season of “Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica”
presented with previously unseen footage. The interviews don’t
really enlighten us on our subjects (that would be impossible
actually) but it was a hoot for my kids to see these tween and
teen idols in all their idiotic glory. My daughter was aghast
that somebody would actually believe that Chicken of the Sea
might be mistaken for anything other than tuna and she’s a tween.
If you’re a fan of this monument to bad taste, then shirk off
your guilt and dive right in to enjoy Nick and Jessica uncensored
and unadulterated (and hopefully unseen in the near future).
You may want to take a shower particularly after the long involved
discussion about Jessica’s virginity. |
