Review:

This film tells all about the rise of a grunge band from the west coast to super stardom. The footage is taken mostly from the 91-92 era and the height of their popularity from the "Nevermind" album. We all get to be privy of the backstage antics of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic. They all seem to be a bit "off" but somehow mesh together just perfectly. Some of the concert gets out of control and there is a somewhat funny scene with Kurt and a bouncer at the show. This film is a tribute to the band as well as serving in memory to Kurt Cobain. The life they lived was too short but it is known as a pivotal band in the rock era. There are sincere moments where two best friends recount their lives after the loss of Cobain and you feel the loss again. ****

Here a list of the songs performed live: 1) Aneurysm, 2) About a Girl, 3) Dive, 4)Love Buzz, 5) Breed, 6) Smells like Teen Spirit, 7)Negative Creep, 8) Come as you are, 9) Territorial Pissings, 10) Something in the way, 11) Lithium, 12) Drain You, 13) Polly, 14) Sliver, 15) On a Plane, and 16) Noise. ****

This was released years ago on VHS but this is the first time a lot of this footage is available on DVD. For anyone who has not seen Cobain live is in for a treat. His stage presence was electrifying. On the DVD songs were intentionally sung different and that bothered me. They either were sung in a different key or different style. There was really no other reason to do this then to just make the fans holler. It was not bad, just different. No question though, this is the best Nirvana footage that has been released so far, hands down. You get to see the band members as people, not just iconic rock stars.

Image and Sound:

The sound quality on this transfer to DVD is terrific. The music is kicking, and when the band rocks, there is no band that was better. The picture quality was not great but it was way better then the VHS. I enjoyed watching the stageshow with the fans going nuts. The editors did a great job capturing the intensity of the concert.

Special Features:

The "Live in Amsterdam" extra contains unreleased performances of "School", "About a Girl", "Been a Son", "On a Plain", and "Blew." This is just more live rocking. More to see, more to enjoy.

Final Words:

For Nirvana fans, or any fans of rock, this DVD is a must see. You will relive some of the best moments in recent rock and roll history.
