The Review:

The third season was, surprisingly, the first year that the show had a COMPLETE season (the first two seasons consisted only of 15 episodes total). While I miss the clever parka packaging that was a highlight of the first two “seasons”, this set concentrates on content over form. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) continues to try and romance the reluctant pilot Maggie O’Connell (Janine Turner) and deal with the nutty characters that occupy Cicely, Alaska. ***

During season three all sorts of interesting things occur. Maurice cheated on his taxes which might undermine his growing relationship with Officer Semansky. Maggie discovers that her ex-beau Rick was unfaithful so she takes to distrusting all men and, later, comes to believe that he has been reincarnated as a dog. Joel is forced to become a marriage counselor for the “wild man” Adam (Adam Arkin) and his fluky wife. ---

Image and Sound: very nice transfer from Universal although there’s some image shimmering and some minor edge enhancement issues but, on the whole, looks very good. There are some issues with analog debris but it isn’t all that distracting. The audio is nicely done as well with the 2.0 Dolby Surround track effectively but subtly using the effects of the format. My only issue is that some of the music has been replacement and music was an essential part of the series. At least it’s disclosed on the packaging now. ---
The Extras:

We’re given deleted scenes for the series, a section focusing on bloopers throughout the season. There’s also a featurette that discusses a number of storylines that were dropped prior to production. ---

Commentary: No commentary tracks
Final Words: Universal has done a nice job with the third season of “Northern Exposure”. We get the 22 episodes of the third season with deleted scenes for every episode as well as bloopers for a number of episodes and “Lost Storylines” essentially a section devoted to episodes that never made it to production. All in all a fine job from Universal.
