Review: |
O say can “O.C.” be the best it
can be/By the season’s early end/ As We proudly hail the best
soap since Dallas/ Through the summery days and the summery
nights/ They’ll keep us entertained until twilight’s last
gleaming I never said I was much of a songwriter. So sue me.
OK, you’ll have to forgive me but hey, we have to salute the
sheer creativity of American TV producers. What other country
could have come up with “Dallas”, “Knot’s Landing” and other
classic prime time soaps. For those of you who discount these
as garbage, keep in mind that Shakespheare was the main soap
opera writer of his day designing his stuff to entertain and
enlighten but with the former always dominant. Hey! The second
season of the l“The O.C.” wasn’t quite as rich or entertaining
as the first but every show is allowed a sophomore slump.
Luckily, the second season really didn’t slump but kind of
did a teen crouch—moved down a little further in the seat
so the authorities couldn’t see them messing around. I’m not
goingto try and give you a run down of the plot. Why? It’s
because I don’t want to spoil the flavor of each individual
episode with my A-1 sauce critique. ---

| Image
and Sound: |
Another
top notch transfer from Warner Home Entertainment. “The O.C.”
looks as golden as those twilights at the beach with almost
as much rich color (and rich people). The images are sharper
than most the intellect of the characters on the show and the
sound! Well, let’s just say that it’s about as active a soundtrack
as you’re likely to find on a prime time soap with nice imaging
and sound placed around your system just the way you like it.
In other words, you’ll be in “The O.C.” zone. --- |

Extras: |
We get
the gag reels from season one and season two. Honestly, they’re
nowhere near as fun or funny as the best moments of this show.
Beyond an occasional bit of farting (yes, Tate Dovonvan we’re
talking about you!) to break up the routine of a scene, the
best stuff is truly in the show. We also get a fine featurette
about the “look” of “The O.C.” Ever wonder who comes up with
the fashion disasters and classy looks this show is well known
for? Wonder no more you’ll meet the lady that co-ordinates
and redecorates the actors like scenery in “Beachy couture:
How O.C. fashion is made”. For good measure we also get a
rather clever TV special that takes a “retrospective” look
back at the show. Add on an extended creator’s cut of “The
Rainy day Women” episode and, well, you’ll begin to feel the
sand etween your shoes even before any hits the beach in any
given episode. ---

| Commentary:
|
Two fine
commentary tracks for “The Chrismukkah That Almost Wasn’t” and
“The Rainy Day Women”. Josh Schwartz and Bob DeLaurentis provided
the commentary for the former while Schwartz, Stephanie Savage,
Alexandra Patsavas and Matt Ramsey provide comment on the latter.
Personally, I would have opted to included Dylan on “The Rainy
Day Women” as well but he might have sued for compensation since
a title from one of his songs was borrowed and messed around
wit by the producers. --- |
| Final
Words: |
Keep in
mind “The O.C.” is still a growing little boy/girl. It’ll take
a few more seasons before we truly find out if this is a series
that can take on the title of “Best Night Time Soap” but I’m
sure that day is coming. Honest. |
