Idiot savant
or rock 'n' roll genius. I vote for the former. Either way,
you have to sometimes wonder whether Ozzy is just brain stem
or whether there's actual reasoning and consciousness going
on. Either way, the series has become a guilty pleasure for
a nation. Has it worn out its welcome? Hard to say but based
on the press given Sharon's fight with cancer and Ozzy's recent
additional head injuries, my guess would be no. Just in case
you weren't paying attention, the television series "The Osbournes"
took reality TV to a new level (high or low you be the judge
of that). "Ozzie and Harriet" it ain't. This variation on the
reality TV genre entertains in the same way that the National
Enquirer and car accidents capture our attention; it's the ugliness,
the scent of blood that attracts us. Or maybe we just want to
see if we can understand what Ozzie's actually saying. America's
most famous dysfunctional family takes center stage and no one's
dropped the curtain..yet. |

and Sound: |
"The Osbournes"
looks great. It's a pity the same care isn't taken in transferring
most television programs to DVD. Picture quality looks sharp
and, despite the fact that it was shot on digital video, the
series looks surprisingly spry. The sound has that sounds surprisingly
flat given the amount of money spent on the series. --- |

Extras: |
If you're
a fan of the show here's where the fun begins. We get unaired
bonus footage, a game cleverly titled "Choosen Your Ozz Adventure"
with three choices; "Curse of the Alien", "Spy Ozzy", "Adventures
in Dieting". Basically these consist of picking from a couple
of scenarios, then a bit of narration linking you to the next
section. It might be funny once or twice. We get a peak at the
Osbourne wedding album in a series of still pictures. The best
extra is the "MTV TV Spots with Tenacious D". Jack Black does
his best Ozzy (circa Black Sabbath) imitation along with guitar
accompaniment. These spots are actually funnier to me than some
of the episodes included. --- |
| Commentary:
|
Here's a
novel idea have another rock 'n 'roll family (the Van Halen
clan perhaps?) do a commentary on "The Osbournes". That would
be infinitely more interesting than the bad commentary track
on the first 7 episodes. It's not essential. Sharon and Jack
seem to have fun taking the air out of each other's tires but
nobody will have fun listening to it. The routine commentary
won't be listened to more than once and it's not as funny or
interesting as the bizarre things going on in each episode.

| Final
Words: |
Welllsszzzsezse,oh
sorry had an Ozzy moment. We get all 10 second season episodes
on a two disc set with some unusual extras.. The series definitely
belongs to the "acquired taste" category. It beats watching
paint dry and Ozzy has his moments. |
