“I Think I Love You”. Really. Oh,
not you but my second season of “The Partridge Family”. Watching
the show in reruns as a kid I fell in love with the mix of
power pop confection and comedy in this series. Yes, it was
like cotton candy for the ears and eyes but unlike cotton
candy you didn’t regret it later because despite the occasionally
sticky sentiments it didn’t get all over your hands. Besides,
Susan Dey was hot (OK for a kid she was hot). The second season
appears sans extras but with a nice solid set of episodes.
Oh and the other Chris kid is in this set so if you’re a fan
of the original Chris (there must have been an episode that
was missed. You know the one where the original Cris is replaced
by an alien that looks like Shirley and has a bit more personality).

| Image
and Sound: |
Susan Dey looks stunning. Oh, everyone
else looks OK. The image quality alternates between quite
good to very good depending on the shape of the source episode.
It’s a pity they couldn’t make the “playing” look more convincing
digitally but that’s part of the charm of this show as well.
The mono sound is crystal clear you can hear Shirley and David
hit all those high notes.

| The
Extras: |
Unlike the previous set there aren’t
any notable featurettes but the chapters are well placed so,
for example, you can skip the opening and not miss any of
the episode. You also have the option of going directly to
a musical performance in any particularly episode which is
a great feature for fans who just want to cool down to a little
bubblegum pop music.

Sadly no
commentary track this time. I would have loved to hear more
about how David Cassidy got that feathered and ultra sheen look
to his hair. Then maybe we could here more about Susan Dey.

Words: |
Susan Dey, Susan Dey, Shirley Jones
(the hottest mom on TV at the time), Shirley Jones (she deserves
equal mention again). Oh and the show looks pretty darn good.
The image quality varies from very good to extremely good
depending upon the source episode and the transfer looks good
as well. Hey, there’s no digital effect that could enhance
David Cassidy’s hair or Susan Dey’s or Shirley Jones’. Oh
here we go again. The musical performances come across with
crystal clarity for the most part there is a hint of distortion
on a couple of episodes but it’s not a chronic problem. Pick
it up today.
