Review: |
If the
title were only true. Pauly Shore became the break out star
for MTV during the 90’s. After a briefly successful film career,
Shore’s star dimmed and he’s been on the horizon ever since.
His “come back” film Pauly Shore is Dead couldn’t even be
called remotely funny. Fans of Shore’s other films (Biodome)
may enjoy this film which begins with the announcement that,
well, Paul Shore passed away. The film then proceeds to show
Shore’s life in flashback, clips, still photos and focuses
on his attempts to get his career going again with a misfire
of a sitcom. Whether or not you enjoy Paul Shore and his brand
of humor will determine if you like the film. If you dislike
Shore, I’d suggest staying away from this film as if it were
contaminated with plague. If you are a fan by all means dig
right in but I defy you to find something funny in this autobiographical
mess of a movie. ---

| Image
and Sound: |
Well Shore
certainly looks lively here with nice, tan flesh tones and rich
deep colors. The detail in the DVD is sharper than most of Shore’s
jokes with exceptionally good clarity. This is a dual sided
single layer disc (with widescreen on one side and full screen
on the other) and given the film’s short running time and extras,
that’s not a problem. The 5.1 Surround Sound mix doesn’t crash
and burn nor does it excel at using the format to its best advantage.

| The
Extras: |
With
a minimal amount of extras, Pauly Shore is Dead manages to
fit all of them along with the film into one nice, neat package
per side. There’s an informative but brief “making-of” featurette,
“interrogating the Wiez” where we get questions and answers
from Mr. Shore himself recorded at a screening of the film
at Cal State Fullerton. The deleted scenes are hosted by Paul
Shore, the Hilton Sisters and Charlie Sheen in what has to
be one of the worst decisions of his career (the other was
agreeing to appear in the feature film in the first place).
There’s also an Aaron Lewis/Staind song parody that is one
of the few things that hits its target with deadly accuracy.
We also have the dubious distinction of having both Eminem
and Proof “hosting” the deleted scenes. What this amounts
to is Shore speaking with the two on video and telling them
about the upcoming scene and who he is hosting the introduction
of the deleted scene with. ---
|
| Commentary:
|
Shore provides
a commentary track that functions better as parody. Shore discusses
how he managed to get the various actors and comedians to appear
in the film. Much of the scripted scenes between Shore and some
of the actors are improvised. --- |
| Final
Words: |
Mercifully
short Pauly Shore is Dead,Well if the stench of this product
is any indication, Pauly Shore is, indeed, dead. We can all
now breathe a sigh of relief. |
