Pearl Jam burst on the music scene over a decade ago
with “Even flow” and “Jeremy” with both songs signaling
the arrival of a unique voice in rock music. Sure, you could
classify them as grunge but bands with that much talent
tend to transcend genres and continue to remain popular
with their fans even after a fad has passed. While none
of their albums have passed the 10 million mark of their
debut, the band has made a steady stream of fascinating
often provocative albums. It will be interesting to see
what the band tackles now that they are free agents and
not signed to a major label deal (guitarist Stone Gossard
recently was quoted as admiring the approach that Radiohead
used to sell their latest album using downloads where fans
could pay what they wanted for a lower quality download
of the album to be followed up by a deluxe edition and regular
release now that they are free agents as well). In the meantime
we have a terrific solo release from the band’s lead singer
Eddie Vedder and this live concert DVD. ***
Considering that it was released a month or so before
Halloween it’s ironic that the band opens with “Severed
Hand” (no it’s not a Halloween song…it’s the just the title
itself that proves interesting). “World Wide Suicide” follows
and we get a stream of punchy, powerful songs that never
let up on the energy the band puts out on stage. The band
tackle songs from throughout their career (bravely throwing
their biggest hit "Even Flow" right into the middle of the
set). ***

Image & Sound:
Looking surprisingly crisp and sharp this concert video
which was shot on high def digital video has very few digital
artifacts although occasionally digital noise crops up but
on the whole the image quality is exceptional. The grainy
look of the concert was intention with grain added digitally
after the fact to big it a raw look. ***
Audio sounds smooth and silky with considerable punch
particularly for the 5.1 mix. The PCM Stereo soundtrack
also sounds extremely good with a nice bass response. This
DVD will give your 5.1 (or stereo) system a work out. ---
