Review: |
A fun, bubbly comedy that works
if you just let yourself slide into it like a warm, relaxing
bath, “The Perfect Man” is far from a perfect movie with enough
holes for your average size garden in the plot but remains
enjoyable nonetheless. Holly (Duff) and her sister Zoe (Aria
Wallace) can’t seem to settle down because, well, their divorced
mom Jean (Heather Locklear) keeps making the wrong choices
in men. Holly finally gets fed up and dreams up an imaginary
man—the perfect man—who will cater to the things that Jean
needs and make her happy so they won’t move again. Holly goes
to her new best friend for elp in dreaming up Mr. Right. Her
school friend’s uncle Ben (Chris Noth) IS the perfect man
unfortunately he’s engaged to someone else. Watching Holly
sustain the fantasy without getting busted and anticipating
the eventual meeting of Jean and Ben is part of the fun of
this frothy if unbelievable romantic comedy.

and Sound: |
Well, what can I say, this film
receives a nearly perfect transfer with nice bold colors,
a sharp, crisp picture and stunning soundtrack. The 5.1 format
is used primarily to create the environment of the film and
not designed to give your speakers a work out.

Extras: |
I like Hillary Duff. She’s got
nice screen presence and isn’t one of those super skinny Ubermodel
types. She’s realistic looking with curves. Which given Hollywood’s
preoccupation with women and girls that look like they’ll
die any minute is refreshing. We get a healthy dose of Duff
in “Mom & Me” which examines the relationship between Hillary
and Heather Locklear in their onscreen relationship as daughter
& mother. “On the Set with Hillary” is another highlight giving
us a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the movie. There are also
deleted scenes and some very funny outtakes as highlighs.

Director
Mark Rosman who got his start in TV with “Even Stevens”, “Lizzie
McGuire” and the TV movie “Life-Size” provides a great trivia
packed commentary track. It’s a pity that Duff and Locklear
weren’t involved in the commentary track as it would have been
interesting to hear them contrast their onscreen/offscreen relationship
and how it fits into their real world relationship with their
family. |

Words: |
If you can get past the fantasy
elements of “The Perfect Man” you’ll find a delightful and
fun frothy romantic comedy. It’s not “Citizen Kane” or “War
of the Worlds” but it’s not meant to be either. Enjoy.
