The Review:

Nothing like a gun carrying, wild eyed chain smoking grandmother to make a family reunion cutting edge. Madea’s family has a reunion when her sister Irene dies and but with every death there must be something to celebrate so the group gets together also for the wedding of Madea’s granddaughter. Tyler Perry’s popular character Madea turns up again in “Madea’s Family Reuion”. Pushing the boundaries with a mix of melodrama, satiric wit and barbs worth remembering for your own fights “Madea’s Family Reunion” will find a popular audience with the release of this in conjunction with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”. Although Perry’s humor won’t be for everyone, fans of his work wil enjoy this romp with its mix of feel good gospel tunes, sarcastic barbs and references to the bible. I’d suggest grabbing this title while you can as when the film version comes out next year, it will probably go off the market so as not to interfere with the marketing of the movie. ---

Image and Sound: Receiving a brand spanking new transfer from Lion’s Gate in the way of “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”, “Madea’s Family Reunion” looks rejuvenated with crisp and sharp images. The colors are bright and vivid and blacks rock solid. The dialog comes across crisp and clear although the stereo format could have been better used than it is here. It’s a minor criticism for a nicely done job by Lion’s Gate. ---
The Extras:

We get an introduction by Tyler Perry. There’s also a featurette on Perry himself giving a bit of background on him. It’s not too dissimilar to the featurette on “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” in the info it provides. We also get a photo gallery with behind-the-scenes shots of the various actors in and out of character. Finally we get trailers for the entire “Tyler Perry Collection” included as well. ---

Commentary: There are five brief scene specific commentaries by Perry. They don’t reveal a lot about the performances beyond what he felt the performers brought to their roles and the way the scene plays out. He sounds like a good natured teddy bear in the commentary. ---
Final Words: A nicely done re-release from Lion’s Gate, “Madea’s Family Reunion” finds Perry and his troop of actors all in top form. The extras aren’t essential but do value to this set particularly if you’ve seen the play and want a bit more background on its production.
