Review: |
Unleashing Pluto for his first DVD
cartoon collection, Walt Disney Studios has come up with a
winner full of classic Disney animation and wonderful character
comedy. These cartoons from 1930 to 1947 feature some of the
crème of the crop for Mickey’s beleaguered canine friend.
Starting with “The Chain Gang” Pluto (who didn’t have a name
at this point) generated plenty of comedy relief. Some of
the cautious canine’s classic appearances are included here
such as the Academy Award winning “Lend A Paw”. ---

and Sound: |
There are
few fleas in this carefully picked out collection of shorts.
The image quality is top notch considering the age of many of
these classic cartoons. The images range from solid to crisp
and clear with vividly reproduced colors on the later cartoons
from the 40’s. The mono sound has solid presence although there’s
still considerable hiss and a tinny quality to the audio for
the pre-1940 cartoons. |

Extras: |
“The Life
and Times of Pluto” provides an interesting background on
the genesis of one of Disney’s most popular recurring characters.
“Pluto’s Pal Fergy” provides an intimate portrait of his creator
Norm Ferguson in a nicely done tribute to the animator. “Pluto
101” focuses on character design and animation and the “Art
Galleries” section details cartoon posters, background paintings,
animation drawings and other rarities. ---

| Final
Words: |
While it
doesn’t feature quite as many cartoons as the two Mickey collections
or as many interesting featurettes, “Pluto” more than makes
up for these short comings with some truly funny classic animated
shorts. |
