Remy (Patton Oswalt) is a rat with refined taste. He
doesn’t go for leftovers in the garbage cans of France like
most rats—he wants to be human and cook. He’s got the skills
so what if he’s a rodent? Linguini wants to be a great chef
but doesn’t have the skills for the job. When the two discover
each other, it’s a match if not made in heaven, at the very
least, made for the kitchen. ***
Retooled by director Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”, “The
Iron Giant”) when the original director Jan Pinkava left
after a disagreement with Pixar, the film has Bird’s zany
sense of humor powering this story. Featuring Ian Holm (as
Skinner), Lou Romano (Linguini and a voice artist on “Cars”),
Brian Dennehy, Peter O’Toole, Janeane Garofalo (Colette),
Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”) and Brad Garrett among
the stellar actors contributing to the film, “Ratatouille”
had the potential for disaster because of the changes that
occurred from pre-production to the final product. Luckily,
the Pixar crew pulls it off without a hitch. “Ratatouille”
is an enjoyable, good natured romp that kids and adults
can enjoy (the latter don’t need to feel embarrassed unlike
many kids movies). ---
Image & Sound:
There’s nothing ratty about this transfer. The images
are crisp, sharp and colorful. Audio sounds terrific with
a lot of activity in the surround speakers. ***
The Blu-Ray looks truly spectacular with an amazing
wealth of detail. ---

No commentary from director Brad Bird which is disappointing.
The extras are relatively slim compared to other Pixar releases
(which, again, is disappointing and suggests a double dip
down the road) but what we do get is quite good. “Your Friend,
The Rat” is an “educational” short featuring Remy and the
character of Emile. We also get three deleted scenes and
an interview with director Brad Bird as well as chef Thomas
Keller. “Lifted” the terrific Pixar short directed by Gary
Rydstrom is also included. Aside from previews, that’s…all
folks. ---

Final Words:
|
A very funny film, “Ratatouille”
manages to be engaging as well. My only complaint is that
compared to many other Pixar releases, this is a bit short
on extras. As with all Pixar films, the focus on character
is as important as the comic shenanigans that ensue, making
this one of the best films that came out in 2007. |
