When I was a boy this was THE show to watch. It was
about as cool as TV war dramas could get and at 30 minutes
(including commercials) just the right length for the attention
span of kids. Set in North Africa during World War II and
based on the real life exploits of commandos in the desert
as they battled the Rommel’s forces. Featuring the late
veteran TV actor and B-movie star Christopher George, Eric
Braedon (here going by his given name of Hans Gudegast and
later to star in “Colossus: The Forbin Project”, “Escape
from the Planet of the Apes” and the TV Soap “The Young
and the Restless”) the show was a dynamite way for kids
(and adults) to get their action fix. Created by film writer-producer-director
Tom Gries (“Breakheart Pass”, “The Hawaiians”, “The Greatest”
and the TV mini-series “QB VII” which, bythe way, still
hasn’t come to DVD) the show’s original dynamic theme by
Dominic Frontiere (“The Outer Limits”, “The Fugitive”, “Twelve
O’Clock High” and “The Invaders”) the series might not have
been high IQ entertainment but the performances, scenery
and direction were nothing less than memorable. ---
Image & Sound:
The show looks as good as could be expected presented
in its original full screen format. The colors are pretty
good overall and image quality although not as top notch
as more contemporary show looks pretty good as well. The
audio is presented in the original mono. Not much that can
be done there but Sony has cleaned up the mono so dialogue
is pretty crisp and clear throughout the series. ---
