Rawhide was one of the many western television series
to be released in the golden age of television westerns,
in the late fifties and early sixties. The show is well-known
for launching the career of the legendary Clint Eastwood
(The Good The Bad And The Ugly, Dirty Harry), but tends
to be overlooked in the shadow of the two “giants” from
the era, Bonanza and Gunsmoke. A shame, since Rawhide is
nothing less in the quality department. ***
This set contains of the first half of the show's third
season. These episodes ran from 1960-1961, and run total
for approximately 13 hours. 15 episodes total are included.

Rawhide was a great television series, despite its
being overlooked by other more popular shows of the day.
There's plenty of action and drama to be experienced here,
and it isn't hard to see why the show lasted as long as
it did, running from 1959-1966. Disappointingly, even all
these years later, the show still remains overlooked, due
in no small part to the fact that isn't regularly syndicated
like those more popular shows. ***
Like other westerns of the day, Rawhide had no shortage
of guest stars. Amongst the guests you'll see in these episodes
are Peter Lorre, E.G. Marshall, Dick York, Dan O'Herlihy,
and Robert Culp. ---
Image And Sound:
Much like their Gunsmoke releases, Paramount has done
a terrific job cleaning up the image and sound quality for
Rawhide releases. The first half of the third season has
production quality that stays true to the earlier sets,
and that's a good thing. There are some minor issues here
and there, but considering how old the source material is,
this reviewer isn't complaining. ---

Final Words:

Again, I'm disappointed to see
Paramount opt for half-season releases that lack any substantial
bonus material. But just the same, the remastering job on
the set is incredible, and no one can argue with the sheer
excellence of the show itself. If you're a fan of the series,
or just westerns in general, it's a set well worth picking
up. |
