Review: |
Can a country music veteran carry
a comedy? Reba McEntire demonstrated that she had the comedic
talents in her previous TV appearances but to play a character
in a comedy? Reba pulls it off in spades. Her performance
as Reba Hart who has just separated from her husband of 20
plus years over infidelity and a pregnant mistress is sharp
and funny. All of that and she’s going to be a grandmother
shortly as her teenage daughter Cheyenne who is still in high
school made a little mistake and is expecting. ---

A very nice
transfer from Fox is a highlight of this boxed set. Nice detailed
reproduction of the colors and sharp images make this worthwhile
for fans. The sound quality although it is limited to DDS 2.0
(stereo surround) is quite good as well. --- |

Extras: |
We have
two featurettes on the creation of the series and one that
focuses on Melissa Peterman who plays the dim bulb mistress
of Reba’s ex-husband Brock (Christopher Rich). We also get
some very funny outtakes and bloopers that demonstrate you
can have lots of fun on the set of a comedy.

| Commentary:
|
There’s a
number of select commentaries including a great commentary track
by Reba McEntire, Melissa Peterman, Steve Howey, Scarlett Pomers,
Mitch Holleman and executive producers Michael Hanel & Mindy
Schultheis on the pilot episode. “When Good Credit Goes Bad”
also has optional commentary with the main cast plus writer/co-producer
Patti Carr and writer/co-producer Lara Runnels. My favorite
commentary track though is from “You May Kick the Bride” which
only has the cast commenting on the episode. The commentary
track is less cluttered than most and it’s clear that there’s
a fondness among the cast members that makes you kind of feel
warm inside when you’re listening to it. Alright, it was the
wine that made me feel warm inside. --- |

Words: |
An innovative,
creative and very funny sitcom finally gets its due by appearing
on DVD. While it took a while, it was well worth the wait with
three very interesting and occasionally funny commentary tracks
and two solid featurettes on the series. The picture and sound
quality are exceptionally crisp and clear. Fox has another winner
on its hands. |
