The Man Who Used To Be James Bond
sleuths again during the second season of “Remington Steele”.
Steele with no practical knowledge about being a private detective
continues to derive his skills from Alfred Hitchcock movies
and other classics. The second season sees Steele harden his
resolve and continuing to fight the good fight for his assumed
identity. The chemistry between Brosnan and Zimbalist is as
usual marvelous.

| Image
and Sound: |
The second season looks…lighter
to me than the first (and not in mood) and the colors are
vivid and the images clear for most of the episodes. Maybe
my eyes need checking. There is the occasional soft shot or
bit of debris that crops up but usually it’s in footage that
was reused throughout the series run. The mono sound comes
across with nice presence and dialog is upfront in the mix
for most of the episodes here. ---

Extras: |
There’s also a “Behind-the-Scenes”
featurette that wasn’t included with the disc that I got so
I can’t comment on it. Also there are cast profiles but, again,
they weren’t included with the disc that I received so I can’t
comment on them. ---

Michael Gleeson
and Sheldon Larry provide a charming commentary track mixing
trivia about the episode “Steele Eligible”. We learn for example
that this episode didn’t have a finished script and Gleeson
met with Larry asking him where he wanted to go to shoot this
episode. Many fans may have assumed some of Stephanie Zimbalist
and Pierce Brosnan’s dialogue was full of ad libs—Gleeson points
out that the stars were very good about making completely scripted
dialogue seem fresh. He asked them early on in the show not
to change dialogue because it could be related to a joke or
a clue to the mystery. Larry works as interviewer fo Gleeson
(and vice versa) asking about how the show was plotted if the
writers room worked the way it does today where its almost completely
collaborative. Likewise, Gleeson asks Larry about the day-to-day
shooting including a stunt that resulted in an onset injury.

| Final
Words: |
A nice set from Fox, I’d just like
to see more involvement from Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie
Zimablist in commentary tracks and featurettes on the third,
fourth and final season. I doubt that will happen as the budget
for these sets have already been set and I have no doubt that
most of the extras have been decided on. Still, a good set
but one that could have been great if the stars had been involved
in every single set.
