“Ren and Stimpy: Season 5 and Some More of 4”
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Animation
Release:
9/20/05
Special Features: Commentary tracks
Review:

This is where Ren & Stimpy sucked. Why? The cartoons still looked nice (sometimes) but the stories and execution just weren’t there. Even the stories that were carried over from Spumco (creator/writer/producer/director John Kricfalusi’s company that produced the first and part of the second season) lacked the over-the-top sensibilities of Kricfalusi and his staff. By the way, these are still the edited versions (Lord knows what Paramount did with the uncut negatives but they still haven’t dug them out. No doubt that will be for the “New Improved Ultimate Blu-Ray Edition” sometime in the future). Image quality is solid with nice color reproductions and minimal analog artifacts and the sound quality is very good which will make fans sing “Happy, Happy, Jo, Joy”. ---

Special Features: We get 13 commentary tracks from the production crew at both Spumco and Games Animation the company that took over production of the show. Kricfalusi is pretty merciless in his assessment of the Games Animation productions although he does give praise where it is due (and also notes which ones featured stories and/or situations inspired by stories submitted by Spumco but rejected for a variety of odd reasons).

Final Words:

It’s a pity that none of these feature the unedited versions that originally ran on TV. That said, fans will be happy to have a complete set of the cartoons. While it doesn’t live up to the first or even the second season the fifth season did manage to have a couple of winners in the bunch. Then again, if you put enough monkeys and typewriters in a room together one of them will write the Great American Novel.
