“Reno 911 Season 5”
Reviewer:
Taylor Carlson
Studio: Paramount
Genre: TV Series
Release:
7/15/08
Special Features: Cop psychology, extended scenes, audio commentaries
Review:

Ever since Reno 911's 2003 debut on Comedy Central, the show has remained one of the most popular shows on the network. A send-up of law enforcement shows like Cops, it's one of those “guilty pleasure” shows - dumb as hell, but you can't stop laughing just the same. ***

The show's principle cast includes Thomas Lennon (also the show's creator/main writer), Kerri Kenney-Silver, Cedric Yarbrough, Carlos Alazraqui, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Niecy Nash, and Robert Ben Garant. Guest stars in Season 5 include Christina Applegate, Diedrich Bader, Seth Green, Lisa Lampanelli, George Lopez, Patton Oswalt, Ryan Stiles, and Nick Swardson. ***

You get all 16 episodes of the show's fifth season in this set. The episodes which aired earlier in 2008, are as follows: Jumping the Shark, Tommy Hawk, Kevlar For Her, Mayor Hernandez, Coconut Nut Clusters, Back in Black, Undercover at Burger Cousin, The Wall, Death of a Pickle-Thrower, Baghdad 911, The Tanning Booth Incident, Stronger Sister, Wiegel's Dad Returns, Junior Runs For Office, Undercover Acting Coach, and The Parade. ***

Reno is a hilarious show that makes no apologies for what it is - a mindless cavalcade of sick and twisted, slapstick-intensive humor. There's not much else that can be said. It's more a series of fast-paced gags than a coherent, flowing series with any substance to it. But I'm not complaining. For this reviewer, the laughs never stopped, no matter how sick or mindless the gag. ---

Image And Sound:

Reno 911 has always looked good on DVD and this latest season is no exception. Considering the “on location” filming that spoofs Cops, I'm amazed at how good this show looks on home video. There are no serious grain or other visual issues to speak of. The audio more-or-less stays true to the way it sounded when these episodes first aired. Not great audio quality, but more than just competent. ***

As with the earlier Reno sets, this one features uncensored audio, but keeps the blurring of faces and nudity intact - this is due to the same actors often playing many different characters, and due to the nudity being fake anyway. ---

Special Features:

There aren't a whole lot of extra features in this set, but as with most TV shows on DVD, I'm grateful that ANYTHING is being included as extra features this late in the game. The highlight of the bonus features here is the Cop Psychology featurette, in which a psychologist delves into the minds of our heroes. It's a weird feature, but priceless just the same, and worth checking out if you are a fan. Just as good is a plethora of deleted/extended scenes. Again, if you're a fan of the show, it's worth checking out what didn't make the television airings, or what got reduced length-wise. Topping things off is a collection of audio commentaries. Naturally, it's the biggest Reno fans who will get a kick out of these - and they should definitely give them a listen.

Final Words:

It's dumb, it's mindless, it's devoid of any substance whatsoever. And yet you won't be able to stop laughing. If you're a fan, do I even have to say it? Get this set.
