As TV shows develop overtime so do their stars both
physically, emotionally and psychologically. Although “Sabrina
The Teenage Witch” is a wisp of a comedy, it’s a delightfully
silly one that girls will love. The 25 episodes of the third
season continues to allow star Melissa Joan Hart’s skills
in comedy develop. Like other shows of this sort (“Bewitched”
springs to mind as the most obvious example but even “Tabitha”
and “I Dream of Jeannie” would suffice), the shows tend
to wane with time as the unique situations tend to become
almost common place for viewers and more difficult to create
new involving situations for the actors and viewers. Luckily,
that’s not true of “Sabrina”. ***
Based on the character from the Archie series of comic
books, Sabrina Spellman finds out one day that she is a
witch and so are her aunts Zelda (Beth Broderick) and Hilda
(Caroline Rhea). While her aunts are good teachers and caregivers
they probably aren’t always the best at monitoring what
mischief Sabrina gets into which is good for us viewers.
Featuring a strong supporting cast including the oft misused
Martin Mull (his skills are used quite well here), the series
is charming, quirky and amusing handling the challenges
of being a teenager in high school and integrating those
challenges into those of being a witch quite well. It plays
to the notion that many high school kids feel different
from their peers. ---
Image & Sound:
We get a nice full screen transfer. Colors are nice
but there is occasional soft images that crop up But given
the age of the show and the fact that it was videotaped
that may have played a part. *** Audio sounds nice, neat
and clean with dialogue to the forefront. ---
