The Review:

The sixth season of "Stargate SG-1" starts off with a bang; someone has turned the Stargate on Earth into a time bomb. Teal'c (Christopher Judge) goes off with his son in search of those responsible. Meanwhile, new team member Jonas (Corin Nemec)helps Carter (Amanda Tapping) come up with a plan. They're going to remove the Stargate, send it through a hyperspace window so that it doesn't explode on Earth. Other stand out episodes aside from the opening two part episodes "Redemption 1 & 2" include "Frozen" where the team discover an ancient woman frozen in ice. When she's thawed she comes back to life bringing a number of unexpected "gifts" to the team. "Smoke and Mirrors" concerns the assassination of an important Senator by an alien who takes on the guise of O'Neil (Richard Dean Anderson). Suddenly, the SG-1 team member is on the run with few friends and time running out. ***

The team also encountered a number of other unusual adventures during this transitional season. It's here that the series moved from Showtime to Sci-Fi Channel. During season five we were introduced to Jonas (Corin Nemec) and his character here acts as a springboard for many episodes. Not surprisingly, the introduction of this new character helped to energize the series. The real reason to watch "SG-1" though are the lead actors. Even in the weakest episodes, Richard Dean Anderson and his co-stars manage to act up a storm. Anderson's sarcastic and witty comments have always separated the show from the pack of other science fiction programs on the air. The look and feel of the show hasn't changed all that much which is good news for the fans. "Stargate" has become, dare I say it, the best populist science fiction show since "X-Files" at reaching a mass audience with intelligence.

Image and Sound: The vivid colors and rich transfer continue to make this MGM title a top-notch DVD set. Like Season Five, Season Six looks terrific. Although the sound doesn't have quite as much depth and the use surround channels aren't as extensive as a feature film, Season Six sounds very, very good. For the money, "Stargate" continues to outpace just about any other set on the market. The detailed transfer allows the smaller details to come to the foreground; the production design, costume design and performances are all enhanced by this marvelous transfer. ---
The Extras: The extras are almost as much fun as the action packed episodes. The Director's Featurettes are shorts that focus on the challenges of the respective episodes they directed. Once again, the producer of this set has done an outstanding job at putting together value added extras as part of the set. While there aren't many features included on every disc, what is included is a comparable value or better than what you'll see with similar television series. It makes purchasing the set worthwhile.
Commentary: Once again, every single episode has a commentary. Granted, not all the commentaries are all that impressive or involved but it does give an insider's perspective on the making of the show. It's a nice touch that makes fans feel as if they are more than passive viewers. ---
Final Words: "Stargate SG-1" continues to be a terrific package. The look of the show on DVD is particularly impressive and it's hard to argue with the price when other series in a similar vein list for twice as much. Additionally, the writing, witty dialogue and the performances of the main cast are always a highlight of every single episode. The Director's Featurette is a nice addition to the set as are the commentaries. The commentaries continue to make a episode you've seen more than once fresh again and provide you with an insider's view of the program. A word about the packaging as well is in order. MGM has chosen to put each episode in individual cases in a cardboard slipjacket. While it may take up a bit more room, the set will handle wear and tear much better than other sets. Once again MGM has done a classy job with "SG-1"
