"Tales from the Crypt-The Complete 5th Season"

Genre: TV-Series
Release:
11/10/06
Special Features: Virtual Comic Book Narrated by John Karris
Review:

That familiar cackling laugh is back as the Crypt Keeper returns to introduce the fifth season of the popular series. While the fifth season isn't as consistent as some of the previous ones its still got some episodes to die for. The fifth season has a great group of writers, directors and actors that make this season a highlight for fans of the series. Although not quite as strong as season four or three (the two best) this set has a number of terrific and dark episodes with just the right off-kilter humor to make the shows work. ***

"As Ye Sow" directed by actor Kyle MacLachlan ("Twin Peaks", "Dune", "Sex and the City") features actor John Shea as a priest that may or may not be having an affair with the wife of another man. This one has a number of fun twists to it. "The Death of Some Salesman" featuring Tim Curry in three different roles is also a highlight. Ed Begley Jr. plays a con man selling funeral plots that gets more than he bargains for when he tangles with Ma and Pa Breckett (Curry) who figure out his scam and turn the tables on him. ---

Image & Sound:

We get an occasional shimmer, edge enhancement and some issues with aliasing that mar the otherwise solid looking transfer. Overall the show looks quite good and they are presented in their original 1.33:1 full screen format. Colors are solid throughout and the stereo sound track sounds quite good with nice separation and dialogue clear throughout. ---

Special Features:

We get a virtual comic book reprint for "Death of Some Salesman" with narration by John Karris. Aside from that there aren't any other extras.

Final Words:

The fifth season will be essential for fans of the series. Although the quality varied quite a bit throughout this season it holds up pretty well all things considered. A pity that there's not more extras.
