“Tales from the Crypt: The Complete Second Season”
Reviewer:
Wayne A. Klein
Studio: Warner
Genre: Horror
Release:
10/31/05
Special Features: Original featurette about the second season; “Bringing Crypt to the Radio”
Review:

The second season set for “Tales” features 18 episodes of grisly horror very much in the spirit of the original E.C. comic published during the 50’s. The good: Overall image quality of the shows are quite good with remarkable detail and color although there is an occasional softness that creeps in overall the set looks as sharp as a razor blade. A couple of episodes have some minor analog artifacts in the form of dirt and damage to the prints but, overall, the quality is consistent. The 2.0 Dolby Digital soundtrack sounds very good with crystal clear dialogue and sound effects a highlight of the soundtrack. The bad: The introductions that were always a highlight of the series as we went through the creepy house down into the basement to meet the Cryptkeeper are missing for the set. Evidently these were deleted at the request of the producers although I’m not exactly sure why. While they were repetitive after ne or two episodes they help set up the mood of the show. Instead, we get a new introduction by the Cryptkeeper. ***

Special Features: The only featurette is a 15 minute “Shockumentary presented in widescreen format (odd, since the episodes are in the original full screen format). Hosted by Mr. Creepy himself, we get interviews and a discussion of the series by people like Joel Silver (one of the producers), John Kassir (the Cryptkeeper in the flesh so to speak) and others. We also get a brief glimpse into the radio edition of “Crypt” which featured Tim Curry. While I would have liked to have all eight eisodes included as an extra, we get a glimpse behind-the-scenes into the production of these episodes by the Seeing Ear Theater. ---

Final Words:

A creepy, well written horror show, I’m a bit disappointed that the intros were cut. The overall quality of the episodes themselves though are quite high and the transfers quite good as well. I’d definitely recommend this as a purchase for fans of the series.
