Calling this a comedy would be generous. I approached
“The Man” with the hope that it might be a parody of those
70’s exploitation flicks. Oh man was I ever wrong. “The
Man” resorts to every cliché of the tired “buddy” flick
genre mixing it up with mistaken identity and God knows
what else. Dental salesman Andy Fiddler (Eugene Levy) is
mistaken for an arms buyer. Derek Van (Samuel L. Jackson)
an ATF agent is pursuing the thieves that stole the guns
and killed his partner. Because the thieves now believe
that Fidler is a buyer, Van needs Fidler to complete his
sting operation, capture the crooks and get back the guns
that were stolen from the ATF's own warehouse. ---
Image & Sound:
“The Man” looks better than it deserves to with a fine
anamorphic transfer. Colors are top notch and image sharpness
is very good. Edge enhancement cropped up occasionally but
on the whole the presentation looks quite good. Most of
the action in the audio department is located in the front
with little effective use of the rear speakers.

No commentary track but we do
get deleted scenes, a blooper reel, the original trailer and
a quartet of featurettes. The first “Sam Jackson’s Guide to
Cursing Like a Bass Ass” lives up to its name. “Who’s ‘The
Man’” and “Making of an Action Scene” and “The Ride” round
out the featurettes providing behind-the-scenes footage of
the making of the movie. --- |

Final Words:
|
Eugene Levy and Sam Jackson
must be desperate for money. With the amount of films these
guys have been in over the last two years it certainly isn’t
for lack of money that they made this disastrous flick. If
someone comes to your home with “The Man” I’d lock the door.
