Ah the undead. They get the best of both worlds. No
taxes, a nice view in the cemetery when there are vacancies
(all too frequently I’m afraid…after all they ARE undead).
But to be undead in Australia in Berkely, Queensland (if
it were Berkeley, California it would make sense. There
are already a lot of zombies there.) where the barren outback
doesn’t offer much in the way of human flesh, comfort, and
human flesh (zombies DON’T have a lot on their minds…that’s
why they’re zombies), well that would be a pain in the rear
end. Combining elements of comedy with horror (much like
“Shaun of the Dead” but this lacks the sharper wit of that
film and a coherent story line), “Undead” tell the story
of a group of survivors holed up in the basement of a building
after a meteor shower has reanimated the corpses of the
dearly departed. Needless to say they end up having to kill
zombie after zombie that are out for a midnight snack. There’s
also some nonsense about aliens involved towards the end
in this hoot of a movie but, honestly, by the end the story
didn’t make a whole lot of sense and it really didn’t intend
to do so. ---

Features: |
Aside from the fact that the
first commentary track featuring writers/producers/directors
Michael and Peter Spierig and other crew members focuses more
on the technical side of things, both the first and the second
featuring three of the cast members are practically bursting
the seams with pride, humor and funny stories as they look
back on the making of the movie. We also get a documentary
“The Making of ‘Undead’”, two featurettes focusing on the
difficulty of making decent looking zombies and “Midnight
Madness” about the brothers and their film appearing at the
Toronto Film Festival. The extras wouldn’t be complete without
“Camera and Make-Up Tests”, “Homemade Dolly Construction Video”
and an “Animatic to film Comparison” to round things out.
Finally as the chaser to this heady drink of horror we get
three trailers, extended scenes, deleted scenes and an alternate
title sequence. Just when you think you’re full, you’ll discover
a section of rtwork and Design Sketches. If these pictures
don’t put you off lunch, nothing will. |

Final Words:
|
Movies like this suggest we
had better treat the dead with more dignity otherwise they’re
going to come back for a bite. An occasionally funny horror
movie “Undead” isn’t at the top of the food chain but it wouldn’t
be a bad rental for Halloween. |
