Review:

Baby faced police officer Tracy Stokes (Nick Cannon) turns every bust into a disaster; cars blow up, car chases at high speeds occur you know all the things that we’ve seen in “Lethal Weapon” and their ilk a million times before. Against his better judgment his captain (Cheech Marin) decides to send him back to school. No, not police academy (that would be another disastrous comedy) instead he’s sent undercover back to high school to investigate the high profile murder of a student. Since he’s the only one that can pass for a high school student he fits the profile and perhaps it’ll keep him out of trouble. Not a chance in hell. He sticks out like a sore thumb as this is a private school populated by Caucasian students and he’s African American. He develops a crush on his beautiful Spanish teacher and becomes a friend with the class president wo may know something or be involved with the killing. He doesn’t exactly endear himself to the new students when he parks in the class president’s space and irritates the members of the basketball team. **

“Underclassman” has a couple of clever one liners and likable performers but we’ve seen this movie before done much better with Drew Barrymore and any number of episodes of “21 Jump Street”. The writers would have done well to mess with the clichés at the heart of the film. This isn’t meant to be “Hamlet” on the other hand it isn’t even “Beverly Hills Cop 3”. ---

Image & Sound:

A beautiful transfer highlights this disc. Colors are bright and the sunny scenery practically pops. There’s no analog debris (not a surprise since this is a recent movie) and the digital flaws are relatively minor. The audio sounds crisp and clear. A suggestion is to watch the movie in French as it’s funnier that way. Everything is always funnier in French. ---

Special Features: First up we get an audio commentary from Marcos Siega, producer Andrew Pena along with the writers Brent Goldberg and David T. Wagner. The writers complain about having to reduce the scope of the action and eliminating characters because of the lower budget of the film (if they had a bigger star this might not have occurred). They also make jokes about how the Vancouver skies are bluer and brighter than L.A. Siega became involved when the producer urged him t see the Goldberg and Wagner’s other films “The Girl Next Door” and “Van Wilder” (I don’t know why). He never saw them although he did see the short they made “Saving Ryan’s Privates”. Siega became involved relatively late in the process and chose him because of a music video they saw that he directed. So we do get lots of trivia, jokes and information about how the film changed from conception to execution. The deleted scenes were deleted for a reason but just in case you want to see them you can watch all 15 with or without optional commentary. We also get the cast auditions, a making of featurette and previews. ---

Final Words:

Never heard of “Underclassman”? There’s a reason. It’s not a very good movie. It’s not so bad that you’ll actually enjoy it later. Where is Ed Wood or Ed Hunt when you need them?
