Baby faced police officer Tracy Stokes (Nick Cannon)
turns every bust into a disaster; cars blow up, car chases
at high speeds occur you know all the things that we’ve
seen in “Lethal Weapon” and their ilk a million times before.
Against his better judgment his captain (Cheech Marin) decides
to send him back to school. No, not police academy (that
would be another disastrous comedy) instead he’s sent undercover
back to high school to investigate the high profile murder
of a student. Since he’s the only one that can pass for
a high school student he fits the profile and perhaps it’ll
keep him out of trouble. Not a chance in hell. He sticks
out like a sore thumb as this is a private school populated
by Caucasian students and he’s African American. He develops
a crush on his beautiful Spanish teacher and becomes a friend
with the class president wo may know something or be involved
with the killing. He doesn’t exactly endear himself to the
new students when he parks in the class president’s space
and irritates the members of the basketball team. **
“Underclassman” has a couple of clever one liners and
likable performers but we’ve seen this movie before done
much better with Drew Barrymore and any number of episodes
of “21 Jump Street”. The writers would have done well to
mess with the clichés at the heart of the film. This isn’t
meant to be “Hamlet” on the other hand it isn’t even “Beverly
Hills Cop 3”. ---
Image & Sound:
A beautiful transfer highlights this disc. Colors are
bright and the sunny scenery practically pops. There’s no
analog debris (not a surprise since this is a recent movie)
and the digital flaws are relatively minor. The audio sounds
crisp and clear. A suggestion is to watch the movie in French
as it’s funnier that way. Everything is always funnier in
French. ---
