Based upon the books Inside Delta Force by author Eric
L. Haney, and brought to the small screen by playwright
and director David Mamet (GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, THE SPANISH
PRISONER)THE UNIT follows the missions of a covert Special
Forces team that sets out both domestically and internationally
to the frontlines of danger to protect the citizens of the
world. Under the radar and outside military command, this
team slips in, completes the mission, and slips back out
without anyone being the wiser. Meanwhile, the spouses of
the unit must deal with life on an army base, full of loneliness
and worry, while their husbands are away on their missions.
***
The pilot episode, First Responders, introduces all
of the main characters of the show via new Special Forces
arrival Bob Brown and his wife, Kim. Through this style,
the audience in a sense become the Browns, and are introduced
to this new world at the same time as the Browns. While
Bob meets his team, including team leader Jonas Blane who
is played with stark efficiency by Dennis Haysbert, Kim
becomes the center of attention of the wives, including
Molly Blane, who has become almost brainwashed from her
years of army living. ***
David Mamet, who has a hand in the series writing, steps
behind the camera to direct two of the episodes, Security,
and the season finale, The Wall. In Security, the unit must
sneak a listening device into the Iranian embassy, as there
have been rumors that Russia may be planning to sell the
Iran materials to make nuclear weapons. The Wall puts the
Unit on the hunt for a Yugoslav general who escapes U.N.
custody after they turn him over. ---
