Review:

The first two seasons of “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” had pretty decent stories involving elements of espionage and fantasy elements the show had solid imaginative TV directors behind the camera which gave “Voyage” an advantage over some of producer Irwin Allen’s other shows. ***

The second season of the show was the first presented in color (the original pilot curiously was shot in color but the first season of the show was in black & white). The stories became increasingly fantastic and, yes, silly during the show’s run just as they did with “Lost in Space” and “Time Tunnel” two other Allen shows during the 60’s. The guest stars during season two helped boost the quality of the show although the writing for the second season was very solid throughout much of the season. Richard Basehart and David Hedison are both top notch in their roles but the constant parade of notable guest stars kept the energy level high even as the quality of the scripts sagged. We also had a redesigned Seaview pres ented during the second season as well as the fascinating Flying Sub introduced. ---

Image & Sound:

Fox has done a fine job with the transfer for the second season of “VTTBOTS”. The colors are pretty darn vibrant considering the age of the series and while the picture quality varies a bit (mostly due to the overuse of stock footage) clarity and sharpness are surprisingly good as well Audio comes across with nice clarity and crispness in the original mono. ---

Special Features:

Although the special features have been limited I have to give kudos to Fox for at least putting together some nice special features for each set so far. We get to see some raw visual effects footage as well as a nice still gallery for the second season.

Final Words:

Before the show began to descend into weekly silliness “Voyage” had top notch acting and direction as a highlight of the show. While I hate seeing these season sets split up at least the quality is good for the second season set.
