In this action packed movie O2 (Tyrese Gibson) is a
reformed criminal trying to make it on the outside. On an
afternoon like any other he went to pick up his son from
school. Soon after, he was marked by street hustler Coco
(Meagan Good) and his car got jacked. Fortunately for O2
he had a gun that he recently stole from his security guard
job, so in comes the first kick butt action scene of the
movie. Unfortunately, his son had fallen asleep in the back
seat and was taken for the ride of his life. After the local
drug lord Big Meat realized whose son he had taken by mistake
he set a ransom of 100,000 dollars that he believed O2 had
stolen from him in a deal gone bad.****
Desperate for money O2 enlists the help of Coco and
his slacker cousin Lucky and goes on a bank robbing spree
of very specific safe deposit boxes. When he didn't get
enough cash, he sent Lucky out to deal with the haul of
diamonds. In the middle of this traumatic kidnapping experience
O2 manages to spare some time to fool around with Coco.
I know what you're thinking, yeah right.****
If you can suspend reality for and hour and a half
this movie is not so bad. There are a few things you have
to overlook. #1 O2's son slept through not one, but two
car chases/shot outs almost in their entirety. #2 No rational
person would meet, sleep with, and entrust their son's life
in the hands of a complete stranger, and #3 What kind of
security job would allow an ex-con to work in a place where
he would even have access to a gun. They tried to explain
it away but it sounded like nonsense to me. There were however
some things I did enjoy. I enjoyed watching Tyrese expand
his acting abilties. Each movie I see him I like him more.
Every prior movie to this, Annapolis being the last one,
his only range of emotion seemed really mad. This one I
believed he was genuinely concerned about the well being
of his son. And who doesn't love a high speed car chase?****
This movie had the chance to break the mold and end
with an unpleasant but justified ending. Instead they decided
to cookie cutter it and not take the chance. I did however
enjoy the Thelma and Louise homage.
Image and Sound:
The picture was a little dark for me at times but clear
in the light of day. The car colors were popping and the
slow motion scene was done well. The soundtrack was kicking
which I enjoyed for the most part but at times seemed too
loud for the environment it was in. The camera work was
some of my favorite to watch just because the angles they
shot at and the manner in which it was done. Filmed in anamorphic
widescreen 2.35:1 and dolby digital 5.1
