The Review: "Walt" chronicles the life of the legendary Walt Disney in such a way that it manages to become more than just a history: it's a life-affirming piece on one of the most imaginative minds of all time. Beginning by introducing us to Walt Disney as a child, we see the twinklings of animation in his eyes at an early age, which carries on through his teen years and with him when he ventures to Hollywood. The eventual birth of Walt Disney Pictures comes into play, several films are made, and we witness the effects of this newfound way of life on Disney, who remained a devoted family man while also bringing endless amounts of joy to millions of people all over the world. Through a terrific amount of interviews with a wide variety of friends, collaborators, and film historians and makers who offer their recollections and insights into the legend, we learn more about the man behind the myth than ever before.
Image and Sound

The 1.66:1 widescreen image is well-balanced for a television program transfer, though could be improved upon with an anamorphic enhancement. Colors are somewhat mild in many places, though the home movies and vintage footage has been nicely mastered in terms of color saturation. Clarity is at times hazy and unbalanced, but doesn't really get in the way. ***

The sound is mastered in Dolby Digital 2.0, and fits the program without being something grand and ambitious. Dialogue and narration is a cross between natural and tinny, and since much of the track is dialogue, little surround or bass usage is present.

The Extras I think that movie historians and buffs will no doubt find this release of "Walt" an ideal source for information about the man himself. Rather than placing a central focus on his films, the film, as well as the special features, take us for a very revealing journey into the business life and personal life of Walt Disney in a way that has yet to be achieved. Much of what has been included here is basically divided into subsections as well, featuring a diverse selection of interviews with many of Walt Disney's collaborators, family members, close friends, historians, and many more. Some of what is divulged within the special features is repetitive from the film itself, but nonetheless contributes to a very insightful look at Disney, who is seen as a devoted family man and an equally devoted filmmaker.
Commentary None
Final Words: Walt Disney was a most beloved man, by his fans, his family, and even by his characters, who possessed the very joy of life he instilled within them. This movie, and the DVD features that accompany it, are a touching and moving tribute, as well as a thriving life force of information.
