During the winter months I had a chance to drive through
the area where “The Waltons” is set. Contrary to my expectations,
it is very bit as small town and remote as often portrayed
on the show. ***
The sixth season of “The Waltons” had a nice shift.
John Boy returns from New York and actress Ellen Corbywas
able to return to the cast after a stroke had disabled her
for the fifth season. Set during 1939 and 1940, the series
focuses on a major change in American history as World War
II escalates and America steps into the war. While the hard
times of the depression are over, the hard times of the
war years linger ahead for the Waltons. ***
We get twenty-six episodes and the most two part episodes
in the series history with four two-part episodes capped
by the return of Ellen Corby in the final episode “Grandma
Comes Home”. This is the final season in which all original
members of the cast appear. Richard Thomas’ return is more
a series of guest starring roles since he had left the series
full time to pursue acting in films and on stage giving
much of the focus over to the rest of the cast more so than
before. ---
Image & Sound:
As with previous seasons Warner has done a nice job
of cleaning up “The Waltons”. Colors have faded a bit but
these episodes look much better than the syndicated versions
that have floated around for years. Additionally, these
are the uncut (to the best of my knowledge) episodes that
originally ran on CBS.
