The Review:

Dave Spritz can’t predict the weather but can forecast his life—stormy. Spritz (Nicholas Cage) finds his life is like the outside of a hurricane with turbulence from his ex-wife (Hope Davis) who wants to remarry, a daughter he can’t connect with, a son who is seeing a drug counselor and his novelist father (Michael Caine) whose respect and support he desperately wants but can’t achieve. Spritz hopes to make the big time on a “Today” like show but his increasingly erratic life and those around him make him feel like he’s moving further and further from success. The fact that “fans” throw things at him in public just symbolizes his humiliation and lack of respect from those he loves. ---

Image and Sound:

The look of “The Weather Man” is much nicer than any of the forecasts that Dave makes. The flesh tones are nice, color captures the original look of the theatrical showing of the film and digital flaws are minimal with some minor issues. Overall the weather’s fine on this DVD. The 5.1 soundtrack presentation is also quite good as well. ---

The Extras:

We get five featurettes on the making of the film. In reality they could have been presented as one documentary but dividing them makes it appear as if you’re getting much more. “Extended Outlook: The Script” lasts about 10 minutes and focuses on the development of the screenplay. There are a number of funny stories from screenwriter Conrad where he discusses the inspiration for all those scenes where Spritz gets hit by various beverage and food items. “Forecast: Becoming a Weatherman” is the shortest of the featurettes and runs less than 6 minutes. We discover how accurate this film portrays the world of a weatherman hosted by meteorologist/technical advisor Tom Skiing. “Atmospheric Pressure: The Style and Palette”, “Relative Humidity: The Characters”, “Trade Winds: The Collaboration” focuses on crafting th look of the film, the development of the various characters, editing and music scoring of the film.

Commentary: No commentary track
Final Words:

“The Weather Man” got short shift by audiences and critics which is too bad; Nicholas Cage gives a solid performance and the film itself manages to be a fascinating glimpse into a man who’s life is falling apart just as quickly as he tries to put it back together again.
