A popular 70’s sitcom “Welcome Back Kotter” has been
in perpetual syndication since the series went off the air
and John Travolta’s career took off. “Kotter” tells the
ongoing story of a teacher who has returned to his old high
school. Kotter has his hands full teaching but he really
has his hands full keeping the Sweathogs a group of students
in his class out of trouble. Kotter and his long suffering
wife Julie (Marcia Strassman better known from “Honey, I
Shrunk the Kids”) help the kids through hilarious crisis
after crisis. Oh and the students have a bad habit of showing
up at Mr. Kotter’s huse without warning. ***
“Welcome Back Kotter” was an amusing show that produced
break out star John Travolta and had a winning supporting
cast as well. It’s not the most politically correct series
but current standards but the show could be funny and teach
a lesson at the same time. It always reminded me of a live
action version of “Fat Albert” but for older kids who wouldn’t
be caught dead watching Saturday morning cartoons. Popular
70’s stand up comedian Gabe Kaplan made the transition to
TV star but his career kind of fizzled out after “Kotter”
despite some film and TV appearances.
Image & Sound:
A decent transfer from Warner Home Video, “Welcome Back
Kotter” looks about as good as a 70’s vintage videotaped
TV show can look. The images are a bit unsteady at times
and color isn’t quite as strong as I’d like but Warner has
done a decent job overall. The audio is presented in 1.0
mono.
