"Wings" - Season 6
Reviewer:
Taylor Carlson
Studio: Paramount
Genre: TV Series
Release:
3/25/2008
Special Features: None
Review:

Easily one of the greatest television sitcoms ever made, Wings never failed to please in its eight seasons on the air. The newest DVD release for the series is the sixth season. ***

The set features all of the episodes of the show's sixth season, spanning four discs. Episodes included are as follows: Whose Wife Is It Anyway, Twisted Sister, The Shrink, The Spark and How To Get It, The Waxman Cometh, Is That a Ten Foot Sandwich or are You Just Happy To Se Me, All's Fare, Miss Jenkins, If It's Not One Thing It's Your Mother, The Wrong Stuff, Insanity Claus, She's Back, Have I Got A Couple For You, Fools Russian, Let's Call The Whole Thing Off, Remembrance of Flings Past (two-parter), Gone But Not Faygotten, Ex Lies and Videotape, Portrait of the Con Artist as a Young Man, The Love Life and Times of Joe and Helen, A House to Die For, Nuptials Off, Et Tu Antonio, Boys Just Wanna Have Fun, and Here It Is The Big Wedding. ***

The premise behind Wings is deceptively simple, but it works so well. The show follows the lives of an airport staff, their jobs, and the lives they live. Among the cast of characters are two brothers who are polar opposites running a small airline, a spoiled and arrogant rich guy in charge of a larger one, a stereotypical immigrant taxi driver, an often-clueless old woman who tends to numerous duties in the facility, and an eccentric, oddball mechanic. ***

Wings is one of those few shows that managed to stay fresh for its entire run. The sixth season featured two major events with its cast - one good, one not so good. The good aspect was Amy Yasbeck becoming a regular on the show. The not-so-good occurrence was the departure of Thomas Haden Church, who brilliantly portrayed the mechanic Lowell. ---

Image And Sound:

Sadly, the DVD transfers of Wings have not been all that great, and the sixth season doesn't manage to be an exception to this. While the picture quality definitely looks better than catching repeats on the air in syndication, the ten-year-plus age of the film really shows. It's clear Paramount hasn't given this show the treatment a number of other series they released on DVD have gotten. The audio is not of great quality, but there aren't any major issues with it either. ---

Special Features:

None. This is disappointing, since I'm sure the cast and crew could have recorded some great commentaries and/or interviews.

Final Words:

I LOVE Wings - it's one of the greatest television series ever made. But what's up with the weak DVD transfers and the lack of bonus features in the sets? If you're a fan of the series, by all means go for this set…. But I'm hoping Paramount will find SOMETHING they can use as bonus material in the final two sets, and hopefully clean up the visual quality.
