During the 60’s “Peanuts” exploded in popularity and
a stage play opened initially off Broadway starring future
“M*A*S*H” regular Gary Burghoff as Charlie Brown. The play
proved so popular that by the late 60’s and early 70’s high
schools were putting on the play (which is where I first
saw it performed with a cast featuring my brothers). Ironically,
the comic strip inspired Broadway play made its way back
to it’s source—sort of. The animated Peanuts specials that
ran regularly on CBS were a big hit as well and the studio
looking for a source for their next special elected to adapt
the play including its songs for an animated special of
the same name. “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” appeared
in 1985 nearly two decades after the debut of the Broadway
show. Two decades and a half later the original broadcast
is finally coming to DVD in a deluxe edition. ---
Image & Sound:
“Charlie” looks extremely good with a colorful, sharp
looking (for the most part) transfer. There were a couple
of images that look as if they were artificially sharpened
with edge enhancement leaving some minor digital flaws but
this is probably the only image issue that I noted. ***
Audio is presented in its original mono format. I had
hoped that Warner would see if the multi-tracks existed
(which they may have done)and remixed them for stereo or
5.1 but it appears the multi’s may be missing. Either way,
the mono soundtrack sounds extremely good. ---
